English

During the last four years, the school has been at the forefront of the National literacy strategy.  Our English Co-ordinator is a Leading English Teacher and is involved in the training of L.E.A. consultants, teachers and the Head teachers from various schools both in Sheffield and in other areas of the Country.

The Literacy Strategy follows a closely structured format which guides the children through all areas of the English Language- (grammar, spelling, reading, creative writing, handwriting, writing for specific purposes, speaking and listening etc.) - in an enjoyable and purposeful way. Both staff and children view the Literacy Hour with enthusiasm.

Reading is, of course, the most important element of all school work and throughout their time at Sacred Heart, children will have access to reading books which cater for their present and growing levels of attainment. Children are encouraged and expected to take home their reading books at night for the specific purpose of reading to parents or carers. Reading diaries/ records are also issued with the books for parents and children to insert their comments.

Children will be assessed regularly by their class teacher with regard to their reading capabilities and any necessary changes made.  A feature of the Literacy Hour is  GUIDED READING, during which time a small group of children and the teacher read from a selection of books at a suitable level and discuss grammar and story contained there in. This does mean however that the reading books sent home are not always read to the class teacher and the parents? role in this facet of school life is more vital.

All work at school is designed towards children becoming more confident and independent in reading, writing and self-expression, together with knowledge of the work of influential writers of children?s literature.
